Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

bell housing bolts

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

Last week noticed a rattle under truck and laying on top of my skid plate was this torx type bolt and the bell housing pop cover. The bolt had made its way loose popped off the cover and flew through the hole. Would not have noticed this unless I found them laying on top of skid. Thinking back I noticed the shift kit was not hitting as hard either. Thinking the worst I dropped the trans and yes all the bolts were loose! Did some research and it seems this is pretty common and not only with gm. The fix is spray the bolts and the trans threads with brake cleaner then red loctite and torque the crap out of all the bolts so this is what I did. Never took off bell housing when working on transmission so I have this in the back of my mind but pretty sure it won't happen again. If it does I have an idea for a permanent fix. And yea I got the kick back now with the shift kit. It seems the trans was twisting slightly to absorb the bump from the shift kit. So if you guys are working on your transmission or have it dropped double check on those bolts! Believe me its a pain in the ass to do just for the bolts! Oh I put in a brand new torque converter a friend gave me a year ago so it wasent all wasted.

Nice.

I do need to crawl under the whole truck anc check bolts soon. Something just feels a bit off/loose, but nothing is manifesting itself.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

yea these bolts are a pain because they bolt the bell housing to the transmission and in order to get to them you have to drop the trans and then take off the torque converter. they bolt from the inside of housing. you can see if they are relatively tight from the outside of the trans tho. at least the bottom and side ones. the threads on the transmission run straight through so you can see the ends of the bolts. at the least see if any have came out.
