Where did you mount or put your spare tire?

Im getting Marks lift and getting bigger tires.
Now my question is, where to put my spare tire?
I dont have enough money to buy a mount in the rear.
So i was thinking putting a rubber mat on the roof and strap the tire down up there.
or
put it in the trunk, but thats going to take up alot of space.
If i do put it on the roof what can i use to make it more aerodynamic? Put som type of material in front of the tire and angle it like a wing?

We need a bit more info here. What size tires are you going up to? Did you get rid of the stock spare rim? Are you talking about putting it directly on the roof? I don't think that would be a very good option without a roof rack.

Put it in the back until you can spend a little money on a cheap curt carrier or something to that effect. I bought mine for around $80 and love it after a few modifications.



Putting the wheel on the roof is a pain, or maybe I'm just a pussy. Either way, in the back for now is my suggestion .

I've been looking at ways to put the spare on the back. I like that set up you have there.

I had mine up on the roof for a while. It doesn't really even leave many marks as long as it's strapped down hard enough. The worst thing you can have is any sort of relative movement.

I rolled around with it in the cargo area for a couple weeks, but that gets old real fast. Eventually I tossed it in a basket on the roof. Its not too bad to get it up there. If it was put directly on the roof any movement at all would be disagreeable at best.

I was looking for something like this, but the only thing i could find was a hitch mounted swing away for almost $800!!!! I do want it in the back, too... (no homo)

Im getting 265/70/17 Guard Dogs or Wardens on the stock rim. I still have the stock spare rim. I still have the stock roof rack on, why dont you think it would be a good option?

This a already a well covered topic on this board. Despite that, people have given you recommendations and yet you still seem unsure of how to proceed.

No one can tell you what to do to your rig. You need to make your own choice based on what's been presented, or think up a new way that no one has tried before.

I would probably not run with a spare around town. Then when I took a trip I would throw it up on the roof. The pressure that should be on the straps to hold it in place on the bare roof I really don't trust the stock cross bars to tie down to.

I also have built a receiver hitch carrier, I had it up in the roofrack, but I don't think my wife would be able to get it down herself if she had a flat and I wasn't any where near to help.

Cost was well below $800 bucks though, $200 tops if you build it yourself.

Does anyone know what the maximum size is that will still fit underneath in the original spare location? I'm running 265/70-16s and mine fits fine up underneath, with room to spare. The OP's tires are an inch larger, which by my guestimate is approaching the maximum size, but I'd love to know what will actually fit?

im pretty sure OEM size is the only one that will fit. Otherwise you're getting pretty close to exhaust.

265/70R16 are not the OEM size and fits, I wouldn't try to put anything larger than a 31" up there. It does get really close to the resonator if it is there but who runs that anyhow?
