Spider gears gone, time for a locker?

Something not working right?

by stonetrail » Sun May 29, 2011 8:13 pm

Well the other day I let my buddy borrow the truck and he destroyed my spider gears, I dont know how all I know is i had to borrow my dads truck and trailer and drive an hour to pick it up. I got it home and took apart the rear end and my question to you is... do I repace the spider gears or get some kind of locker? I would like to get a locker but dont know too much about them. like what kind? what fits? would I just be able to take out the old spider gears and just throw in a locker? if im missing the page where this is addressed sorry could you please redirect me.

I don't think the smart guys have enough information for them to tell you.
Based on what I have read previously....
If you have an 8.0 rear about your only option is the G80 locker or maybe replacing the spiders.
If you have the 8.6 rear there is more aftermarket support.
I think the 8.6 only came in the V8 or LWB/EXT models.
If you have a short wheel base I6 like me you likely have the 8.0.
Unsure about the spiders but you if you are lucky you can get a whole rear 8.6 with the G80 for about what you would pay for a locker.

For the cost of rebuilding the differential and only being able to install a G80. You can probably get a rear axle for the XL and upgrade to a locker. The 8.6 that comes in the XLs you have more of a choice for lockers.

FWIW, do like they said... You'll want to fully rebuild that axle, anyway, if you're going to stay with the 8.0, which will be more expensive than a junkyard 8.6... If the sipider gears are trashed, they've sent particles into all the bearings which will need to be replaced, as well...

And if you really want to keep the 8.0, I have a perfectly good one with a g80 underneath my truck that I will trade for a working 8.6. :poke: I see quite a few under $300 in the tristate.

I have 3.73s. The damage looks alot worse than i thought, if i can replace my spider gears i think i'll just do that for now, I just need it back on the road but its not looking good...

For $350 in your area you can get a 3.73 with a 8.6 rear end. You don't have to check the setup, you don't have to know how to do all of that. You get a better rear end and you get a better selection for lockers.

I think you would be money ahead by changing it out.

:Iagree: The spider/side gear kit alone will cost you more than that from GMPD.

can someone post up what years will fit his? Seems like the newer axles have more sensors which you can work around but I can't remember what the year break off is.

He has an early vehicle, so he can use any year axle and just snip the wheel speed sensor wires off of a later axle.

2006+ vehicles need to use 2006+ axles if they want to keep ABS/Stabilitrac.

Is the ABS/stabilitrac something you would have to use for 06+, or would it couse any problems if you dont apply it?

The ABS and stability controls will be nonfunctional and you'll get warning lights on the dash. You'd probably have to unplug the ABS fuse in order to not get your ABS locking up all the time.

Yep, like has been said a few times, if your 2002-05, any year will work fine, and throw no codes/ lights. If your 06' and up and want to retain the ABS/traction control then only get an axle from an 06' and up.

Yea, I'm currently running a 8.6" from a 2005, I have a 2007, so the ABS/ Stabliltrac is non functional. Got a ABS and the stabilitrac light on all the time. Just took out the ABS fuse for now. Personally doesn't bother me, so its not an issue for me, but down the road I may try to make it functional.

Will just cut the sensor mount off my old axle, get some new relutors, and cut a hole where the mounts/sensors will need to be. Should be not too hard, but we will see..

Ok thank you, just reading alot of the post talking about the 8.6" swap I want to do it myself too. And also because I only have 3.42 gear ratio, I want to swap those atleast to a 3.73. Hopefully an aftermarket locker also.
