A Little Advice

1) Whats your mission? What sort of traction do you need for the terrain you're targeting? I could never use ATs again, for instance.

2) Discount Tire is on my permanent shit list for their corporate legal policy of not dealing with vehicles with spacers. You might bring your rims in to get tires mounted, but they won't touch the vehicle if they see it. I have no use for that sort of pussyfootedness.

My local Discount Tire (AKA America's Tire) hasn't said a word to me about my spacers...

Of course two of the managers there are wheelers...

Bill, I always figured that ATs, having many more biting edges than MTs would do better for you in your environment. Have you really found situations out there where you need the cleanout an MT offers?

ATs are reported to work better aired down on dry slickrock. Everything else I drive on seems to be easier with MTs because of the side biting lugs, and the large voids catch the rocks better. Not so much for clean-out because I avoid mud if I can. Stuff like this:

Chris, the problem with the treadwrights is their 245/75/16 lists as 30.9 and I'm not sure he can go there without spacers. I think the max is 30.5 and some have done 30.6 which is what a 245/75/16 should come to.

Ah ok. Maybe they have another size he could run without spacers then. I just really like their prices and read alot of good reports about them. Appreciate the heads up.

they have good deals and great reviews but their tires usually run a little tall.

Now he said that he wants to keep his stock rim in one of his posts or did he mean stock tire size??

you're right Steve, Mark does mention a lift but no spacers.
Mark, if you do a 2 inch lift and 1.5 inch wheel spacers you can do a 265/75/16.
Without a lift/spacers you can do a 245/70/16 or a 255/70/16. Some guys have done 245/75/16 without a lift, it just depends on the tire.

If you want to do the 245/70/16 you should be able to do that without the lift.

The only real way to know if those will fit is to try them. Realistically speaking, the 245/75 should fit even at their listed 30.9" diameter. The extra .2" should be within clearance range, and the tread width should be narrow enough. But I am in no way saying that I will personally guarantee fitment. It's just my opinion. I mounted my spare.wheel with a 265/75 BFG on the front over the weekend, with no spacers, and it just barely rubbed. Ball joint mod would've fixed it.

You will want to add wheel spacers on there. There are a lot of tires that will fit the stock rim, but they won't clear the steering knuckle.

John, what gear ratio do you have? With almost 5 inches of lift those 245's you mention will look pretty small.

Agreed, and I love both treadwrights product and customer support. If you have a problem they WILL take care of you. I have the pumas and turns out I also could have fit 30.9" but it's really your call. As far as AT verse MT that's up to you and what works.

I'm running the Silent Armors in LT265/70/17 E, they work great here, I've tested them on desert-ish trails, mountain roads on pine forests, snow, rain and pavement. They've worked great for me so far, same tires that Bill had.

I'd stay away from Discount because of their spacer policy (and from any other location that has that policy or a stock size only policy). I got mine through a small local store, they were willing to work with the spacers, and also important, they were willing to sell me what I WANTED. I wanted those tires in a load range E (10 ply), I had to wait a few days and pay shipping charges from their distributor in CA, but the manager was more than happy to make the necessary phone calls to figure out where the nearest set of tires was and to get them ordered. They got my business, and I was more than happy to recommend them to other friends (a friend bought a set of MT/Rs for his Toyota from them a few months later).

If you're going with that much lift, you should consider larger tires with spacers or aftermarket wheels; honestly, 4.5" of lift with near stock size tires is going to look funny, you should have seen how mine looked with just a 2" lift and the stock tires, and you're not gaining any clearance on the rear diff.

If you get M/T's, I'd recommend to stick to something that other people have tried in the snow, because some M/Ts are not known for having great snow traction, and I bet you'll see more snow in a month than I do in the whole winter season.
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.
