Gordinho's Rear Bumper Project

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

Beads on the hitch were done with much better welder. The mounts are actually mounted through the bumper. So extraction points are solid angle bolted to the frame.

OK, cool... None of the rest of the stuff reall matters, structurally, then... You could grind it flat, then flap disk it, then run some Bondo over to fill the pores, and paint over it...

Also, did you see my edit on the last page?

I designed the mounts this way so that they don't loose any strength for extraction purposes. 3/8" thick 3" angle, grade 8 bolts to frame. I think they will hold up well. Receiver welded front and rear using a Hobart 220v with gas. That thing ain't going anywhere!

EDIT: Thanks for the link, Mike... but the coupon code is not taking.

A few updates... been working on the swing arm and the hinge. I was originally going to do a spindle hinge, but after looking at double shear, I decided to make my own. Started with the top hinge bracket.
Image

Then I notched the end of the arm and welded in the tube.

Added the first bend in the arm...

Added the back support as well as the side filler/support for the top hinge bracket.

I still need to drill out a the bottom hing bracket, thats why you see the bolt sticking up as much as it is. I'm using a 3/4" grade 5 bolt for mock up. Going to see how it holds up once its in place.

I also reinforced the inside of the bumper a little where the hinge sits. This adds some support for when the arm is open.
Image

Its slow going, but its moving. Had a bit of an issue with the latch I ordered. I found one on Amazon for $20... so I ordered it...
Image

This is what I found in my mailbox...

So needless to say, I need to return it and order a replacement that is not meant for model cars. I still can't believe this thing was $20!

Looking good Mario. That double shear will be sweet once it's all set up.

That's looking nice Mario! Bravo!

Will you be using a thrust bearing for the swing action on the hinge?

That double shear hinge makes me want to cut my tire carrier apart right now and redo it. Mine has developed a sag when open.

I'm using this design...

I just need to get the bushings. They are sitting in my Shopping Cart on McMaster... just need to make finalize my list before i place the order to combine shipping. For now, I've got a thin tube that just about fits perfectly which I'll be using as temporary bushing.

Thanks!

I think I weighed the 10' section of C at 80lbs. This is almost all 10' of it plus all the extra metal for the swing arm... I'm guessing close to 40-50lbs. Going to weigh it once its complete.

Thanks. I went through 3 step bits to drill out the brackets.... but I have them drilled. I ruined my 3/4 bolt in the process, so I have to get another. With washer above and below the arm, it holds pretty well for not being tightened, almost no deflection.

Thank you, gentlemen. It is coming along very nicely.

I shot it with a quick rattle can and left it on the truck for the time being. I need to take measurements for the tire carrier, some braces, and maybe a couple of other things.
