Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Rebuild or Replace

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

ewww... Still makes the noise when it's warm...

Before you go ripping the engine out, you might take a look at the cam chain tensioner. Lots of things can make a ticking noise...

I have to throw this out there, because nobody mentioned it. Are you sure it is a nock/tick from the internals of the motor. I haven't seen any one say anything that would rule out exhaust leak or cracked manifold. Its somewhat common for a ticking manifold leak to go away after the engine warms up. And as the leak/crack gets worse, you start to hear it all the time.

You're second description almost nailed what I've seen before. I have a broken exhaust manifold bolt on the passenger side. You hear the leak when the engine is cold. And by the time the engine is half warm it starts going away. Sometimes you can only hear it when you put load on the engine.

And from what I've read, a cracked manifold isn't uncommon on the TB. And broken manifold bolts are somewhat common on the 4.8/5.3/6.0 V8s.

Actually, I hadn't thought about this, but the 4.2L cracks exhaust manifolds pretty commonly, from what I gather. I know several on here and GMTN have had it happen.

Rory's truck taps along like an old tractor because of that.

Our old one sounded like a diesel engine from a cracked manifold.
Once lifted 03 Trailblazer on 35's, gave it up to travel the USA with my family.

I imagine that I can get Hatchet, AJ, and Erik to come over for the weekend as well. The four of us did a motor swap on Hatchets truck recently, starting Friday night and had it fired up before lunch on Sunday.

I actually might take you up on this offer. I'll PM ya in a week or two when my break starts to see if we can set something up.

My Dad's Silverado actually just had a loose manifold that did the exact thing your saying. It ticked and was dependent on the revs, however it was simply just a tick. What I'm experiencing is a lot more than just a tick, but than again it is something to look into.

Any suggestions on how to tell if it is a cracked manifold? Plug up the tailpipe and put a pressure gauge in the O2 sensor hole?

Thanks for the responses and support
