Not following up here is just disrespectful, IMHO. Best/easiest to follow advice in the thread was to use the cabin heater as an aux radiator. I seem to need to do this every ten years or so on some vehicle or another.
I consider after a week that the "please keep comments to helpful ones" request has expired. But I consider these comments to be helpful for the future to anyone else going out alone. If you value your health and safety:
Never go out without telling somebody local where you intend to go and your return ETA.
Never go out (even for a 3-hour tour) without the means to live in or near the vehicle for at least 24 hours. (water, food, change of clothes, source of warmth, shelter)
Never go off pavement farther than you're willing/able to walk out from (but know you're better off staying with the vehicle)
Never go out (even in the daytime) without adequate flashlights and spare batteries.
Never go out without means to keep your cell phone charged. Consider adding CB, Ham, or Sat comm gear.
Consider never going out alone without adequate spare parts, voltmeter, fuses, and tools.
Anybody violating these rules should be looking into their risk/reward equation calculator (brain) to see why they're choosing to take such risks. Folks with people who depend on them (wives, SOs, kids) should ESPECIALLY look hard in a mirror when they propose impulsively going offroad while unprepared.
