Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Air intake Questions and help

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by Ghost » Fri Jun 01, 2012 12:21 am

Hi i drive a 2005 TB 37k miles. no 4x4 no cruse control, no auto mirrors just bone stock :).
My Vin# gives me the info that the truck is an 2004... but the driver door sticker says 2005

Here is what i have under the hood:

Image

Under the stock air box is a "Spectre" autozone filter for $29.00 and a rubber cap $3 from lowes to cap off the magical hole on the intake pipe i honed out the top inside of the airbox so the rubber cap would fit nicely.

I am debating which air intake system to buy between these 4 big company's.
K&N, AIRAID, VOLANT, cFe.

I have noticed the K&N 57 series (plastic tube kit) also removes the other plastic box "Resonator" that say's: VORTEC ( i have no idea what the box is for)? my guess is that if the black box that says vortec was removed and just a straight pipe with a air filter i could see more gain...+ loudness?

I would go with the 77 series but I do not like chrome & I don't think metal does a good job as far as heat resistance.

The other ones look nice like the Volant but I really like the LOUD rumble an aftermarket air intake makes when you punch the gas pedal:) and that my friend is why I am Deciding to go with K&N, but I want the professionals opinion which one is best.

note: MPG isn't an issue with me, the harder i drive the less mpg i get if i granny it my mpg is fine.

Please feel free to chime in.

I think the consensus on this board is the standard paper filter gives better filtration and is better for offroading.
I do know that Kyle (aka Hardtrailz) runs a "green" filter and gives good reviews and he is a heavy offroader. Other than that I think most run a paper filter.

Correct, the K&N lets in 100 TIMES the dirt of the stock paper air filter.

I don't know what Donny runs, but Kyle runs the green filter, and his intake has stayed clean. The difference is that it's cotton cloth, not gauze, like a K&N is...

This post worries me... looks more like something I'd see on GMTN or TV...

Don't worry too much Jason - stick around here and you'll get your priorities straight.

2wd vehicles belong on gmt... It seems that more and more people are joining which is great for the forum, but people need to understand that we don't care about speed. I asked all my performance questions on TV. Then came here to learn about offroading.

I do not agree. Jeff has a 2wd tb and we just went wheeling a couple weeks ago. He went everywhere the 4x4s went. I think there is a few other 2wd guys on here that do plenty of wheeling.

I love Modding. Problem is no 4x4
But that wont stop me from Baja through mud water etc balls to the wall. I want a loud intake and I want something other then stock
I have no problem trashing the k&n and using a different filter. But I want to know about the intake hose by k&n. I do a lot of asfault driving since there is no where legally to go off roading in ventura county, ca.

I know Fishsticks and myself have made our own intakes, more or less the same. I know mine was loud when I did it. Still need to go back at it and make it cleaner.

NOT sent from an IPhone.

Do you have photo's of your custom air intake?

I seem to keep reading about volant air intakes and how many folks use those.

All i am curious is what the plastic box on the top of the engine that says: Vortec is for? and would removing it and if adding a K&N CAI KIT 57 series, what would I would benefit? I know this forum is mostly or all 4x4 topics but the other forum i was on is MIA/DEAD. 90% of the time i am on tar but of course when i do go camping i will do some off roading. The topic to discuss is what i want to purchase and if its worth the $200.00 Every Vehicle i have owned i have only removed paper filter and replaced with K&N type but have never bought a REAL intake kit.

The intake resonator on top that says "Vortec" on it is the intake resonator. Its only purpose is to be extra volume in the intake tract, so that the resonant frequency is not in an RPM range that the engine will see, so the intake won't make noise. They do nothing for or against performance.

Ghost, an earlier poster mentioned GMT, that was a reference to GMTNation.com. Most of the folks that left trailvoy have landed there for their non-offroading needs. It might be you can search there and find what you are looking for.

Should have made your own intake. Much more cost effective and you could have dumped the money you saved into lifting your TB. Like James put it, you have lots to learn grasshopper.

And for the record "hotness", 2wd vehicles can't go every a 4wd can. And if they can, that means your not really given her shit out there lol.

My gf has NO say in anything when it comes to my truck. Especially because she once said something along the lines of "my car is out of carburetors" and easily fell for the "your lights are low on halogen fluid".
I let her control the radio...
