I finally joined because 1. I realized just how much I have used this site, and how many times it has bailed me out, and 2. After about 3 years of ownership, I may have something useful to contribute from time to time.
I am going to attempt to attach a few photos from this last weekend up in Flagstaff. Funny story about this…we ended up getting up there several hours later than planned. On our way out of town the TB died on us before we were even 5 miles from home. I was able to put it in neutral and restart it while rolling and get it back home to the garage (albeit engine missing badly). About a month ago I was noticing some missing and occasionally where the motor would die even at speeds above 50 (strangely NEVER throwing the CEL or code). Using the help of this site I was reasonably sure that it was a good idea to replace the ignition switch. I did this about 2 or 3 weeks ago and the problem seemed to completely go away…at least until we had a room booked and were on our way out of town!
Now, I am not normally one to throw parts at a problem randomly however we were REALLY wanting to get out of town—only being out of Illinois for a year, I guess we were needing a snow fix. So I pulled out the scanner and BLAMMO I had like 5 or 6 codes after it was running PERFECTLY the day before! I had codes along the lines of misfire, camshaft actuator, crank pos sensor, fan clutch over speed, cylinder 1 misfire! I figured that the instant onset of all of these, from nothing the day before, was probably due to in reality 1 or 2 of these being an issue and the others being a result of the 1 or 2 things truly wrong.
So between an incredibly frenzied research of this site and some chaotic logic on my part, I figured my best bet was to throw a new crankshaft position sensor and a new ignition coil wire on cylinder 1 at the problem. Amazingly, the parts store about 5 miles away had them both in stock. Got them home, after cramming myself into and out of the wife’s miata, and got to work. Next I did the “non-tool” crank pos sensor relearn procedure, and then we packed up and tried it again.
We ended up not having a single hiccup the entire trip. Flag is about 2 hours from us each way, not to mention the time we spent driving around and on some trails.
THANKS for ALL the help over the years!!!
