did your electric fan die, or your mechanical fan?
are you sure it is your fan and not a Tstat?

if you got a smart phone get a flash light app they are free, and use strobe it will use less battery.

yea that is good idea and should help also if not sure about Tstat, could just remove better to run cold than hot and dead in water. You might need to call for a tow.

Can you tie something (zip ties, handkerchief, etc.) over the fan to lock it to the pulley, so it'll run all the time?

Can't do this with our truck. Our tstat is part of the water neck, and you can't connect the hose without the neck.

If the mechanical fan will not spin and cannot jerry-rig a solution up, you may need to wait until the morning/the block is cool. Then limp back as close as you can get to the road, and get it towed.

Both the fan and the tstat generally are fail-safe designs.

Anyways, if you look down in there, you should see some bolts opposing each other. See if you can loosen them and tie something between them. If you can tie those bolts together, you should have a fan that is mechanically attached to the water pump, and therefore turns with the engine no matter what.

Don't worry about any of that. I'll PM Roadie's number. He's 24/7 recovery. He even caters it with fancy cheese and crackers!

And just to add usefulness to this comment, I also support JD's idea. Seems like the perfect job for a good roll of safety wire! But i thought the fan clutch was designed to fail into the "engaged" position. Unless the failure failed...

Hope you get out alright. I've been in your situation plenty of times; it just builds character :)

Or did you puncture your radiator and no longer have any fluid to cool the engine?
