Fuild Levels

I have a question on fluid levels. The rear differential to be exact. The manual calls for 4 pints. But the way I've done it since I was a pup was to remove the fill plug and fill until it starts to flow out, then quickly re-install the plug. That's how I did it the other day when I did the re-gear, my TB's 8.6 took well over 2 quarts. I would guess 5 to 5.5 pints before it started to flow out the fill plug. Should I of just stayed with what the manual called for? I know that to much fluid can sometime be just as bad as not enough.

My dads 1999 truck has a tag on the rear axle next to the fill plug. It says something about synthetic fluid and that this axle doesn't get filled all the way up to the fill plug. Maybe your 8.6 is in similar situation?
Maybe the new gears and powertrax are less voluminous than the factory stuff? I would think that the stock open carrier would be less voluminous, but maybe?

I've always filled til it reaches the fill hole... that's what I was always shown
