Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Tech 2 scanner

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by Spot u 3 » Thu Oct 31, 2013 6:29 pm

Hello everyone,

I came across this website that is selling GM Tech 2 scanners. There going for $300. The cheapest one I've ever seen was $1200. Scam or real deal? Here's the http://www.obdiiscanner.com/professional-tool/gm-tech-2.html

The link doesn't work for me. Sounds too good to be true.

Let me know how that works out for you. I could sure use a Tech 2 at work. If I had to guess, I'd say that it will probably be much more limited in it's abilities than the higher dollor units. I have a decent Actron reader that has done me well so far.

China has come a long ways in their quality over the years.
If things keep going as they are eventually we will work for China or India.

True. My industry has been selling them test equipment for 30 years to improve their quality. However, the ownership of their most advanced semiconductor fabs is mostly offshore. Notably from Taiwan. Must fry their butts. (It's also a reason I don't think China will ever invade or molest Taiwan. Chine needs their expertise and fabs. You can't invade and take over a plant whose billions of $$ of equipment can be 95% destroyed in minutes by pouring in readily available corrosive liquids. )

In one sense we already are. We work, make money, and buy stuff they assemble. What's very, very worrisome is the potential upcoming rare earth element shortage/embargo. Without Tantalum from China, the world's economy collapses faster than a shortage of oil.

It's funny you mention that Bill, cause it seemed like I was the only one in my social group that realized they are responsible for most of our rare earths, and the recent issues that have revolved around them tightening up supply.

edit:

It's unfortunate it'll only go to OBD2.

Harbour freight has a tech 2 that says it'll do ABS and it's only a hundred.

if I recall though the Tech 2 can actually send commands where it seems that HF is just a scanner.

HF doesn't use the phrase "Tech II", but the brand name is "Cen-Tech" which is their brand of mid-range electronics stuff.

I think we need to define what Tech 2 means. I was also under the impression that it could send signals as well as read them. Are we wrong? Can these inexpensive models do what the high end units can do? Or is it like anything else... They can do a small portion of what a snap on can do?
