Broken Transfer Case & Upgrade to 4.10 gears

Something not working right?

by Gordinho80 » Sun Sep 08, 2013 11:20 am

Something tells me the dealer gave me the wrong part # for the rear flange/yoke.

The joints and strap kits are from RockAuto. I called a dealer and asked for the flange, it was crazy expensive. Asked for the part #, then ordered that part on GM Parts Direct. I thought I was crazy so I matched it up to the old one... and its wrong.

Now what???

Robert, I'm going to get a pic of the wires I need. Can you check for the wires and for a good flange from the rear axle? You'd probably need an impact gun to get the nut off of it, though.

If anyone has a junk yard where they can cut one off... No luck in my area...

PM me an address and I will get the plug as well as the rear flange in the mail to you.

I was hoping you would take dozens of pics and painstakingly document it. We need experienced people to post big ole how-to articles with immense detail.

Personally I've been having a hard time taking enough pics, editing them and still being specific.

Seriously, it's why I take so many pics. I haven't had need to do this job yet. Hopefully you can do a better job than me. lol

I'm horrible at taking pictures as I go. I took NOTHING so far. Once I get going with the wrenches in my hands, I put everything else to the back of my mind. That, and I'd rather not handle my camera with greased up hands...

My buddy is probably coming over tomorrow to give me a hand with this. He's a former mechanic, turned Service Manager. He hasn't touched wrenches in years, but he has done gears before. And my neighbor used to have a 60s camaro that he did gears on, so he'll be popping over.

If they are here doing most of the work, I'll shoot pics!

Well, slight change of plans. I dropped the axle off with a mechanic (friend of a friend). He's doing all the labor, including replacing the axle bearings and seals, and all other bearings. I should be picking up the fully rebuilt axle on Saturday!

All I'd have to do is bolt it on and go! Straight to Firestone for an alignment! I goofed up pretty bad when I put the front end back together. I left off the toe adjustment bolts that hold the lower control arms in place. I tried to move the truck because I was supposed to have my driveway sealed, and the steering got kicked out of whack pretty bad. Front looked like this: \ / instead of | |...

Got the bolts back and on straightened wheels to sight... enough to get it to shop for alignment once its done.

Thanks again, Matt, for the yoke and the wire!

Ok. The yoke that Matt sent won't work. Slipped my mind that the 8.6 rear has larger spline pinion. I need to order a new yoke but dealers won't give me part # without the last 8 digits of a VIN. I don't have an EXT VIN. Can anyone help me out?

If I see an EXT TB in the parking lot at school, I'll grab it for ya.

Mike Barton's has the 8.6 from the factory because it is 2006 V8. He can probably help you faster than I can

Pretty sure its the 30 spline, yes. But if I can get the GM part #, i might be able to get it locally for same price. Know a guy who knows a guy at a Chevy dealer...

some of the dealer websites have vins, if all else fails you might be able to find an EXT that way.

Philbertos thread GM Vehicle History Requests may help you if you can find where the vin #s are kept. :)

As of right now, the mechanic who is setting up the axle for me is going to attempt to chase out the 1 broken bolt from the original yoke. Then drill out all 4 holes to remove the threading. Once done, I would use grade 8 bolts/nuts in place of the OEM strap bolts threaded directly into the yoke.

This should work just fine, I feel.
