Is there a way to test a Cpas to determine if it is bad before you replace it? Just wondering because I replaced mine and I think I was sold a bad CPAS so I would like to test it before I replace it again.

Another thing I noticed is when it chugs the RPMs stlightly increase and decrease. Right now I'm about to take it to someone and see if they can't figure out anything....

I saw previously you cleaned the CPAS and your problems went away for awhile.
Last we heard your oil was withing 2k miles of needing changing. Did you ever change it?
I would change the oil/filter and clean the CPAS again and see if that clears things up.
if you recently changed the oil/filter and cleaned the CPAS, I might replace the CPAS.

everyone has their own preference on oil. I usually go with whatever name brand(Castrol,Penzoil,M1) full synthetic my parts store has on sale when I need oil.
Just make sure to use a good (not the orange FRAM) oil filter.
I change mine every 7500 miles which is about 2X per year. Most use the oil life monitor but mine is not active.

Listen around 0:13 you can hear it kinda sputter. Any clue as what it is? I rulled out a vaccum leak. Going to get the fuel pressure checked and a compression checked.

I believe that is your washer fluid level sender. Nothing of consequence to the engine.

P0014 is an error thrown by improper cam angle. The camshaft actuator is potentially fouled.

P0014 and P0013 are very similar codes, dealing with the same potential issue. I do not recall if the manual has a section specifically for P0013, but basically it's an issue with the high voltage side of the CPAS. (TangoBravo, this is for you too) There are a few very easy resistance checks in the diagnostic routine that I posted for you before (link above). Those should help you in determining if the CPAS is bad, but it is not a end-all-be-all.

Well I changed the fuel filter and problem solved for the time being. Also added a can of seafoam. I'll give it a week or so and go from there.

That should have probably been done a long time ago... but a fuel filter cannot affect a P0013 or P0014. I would still recommend that you check your CPAS with a multimeter. But I honestly don't expect that you will.

Yeah James the info you posted was very helpful. I have been going through tracking down what the route cause is exactly. I now(thanks to you)have got the problem pinned and shouldn't be long before Im done with this issue.

Ok, seriously. Go BUY ONE NOW. They can be fairly cheap. I got mine from Radio Shack for something like $25 and it does everything I've needed so far. With a modern car, you have no excuse not to own one.

Why are you looking in Chilton or google? I linked to a post where the instructions from GM are posted.

Ok so got my new acdelco CPAS in from gmpartsdirect. I troubleshooted the CPAS I got from Orielly and determined that even though it was new it was certainly bad. And aftet looking at the differance between the two you can see the differance in quality. It was fun I even got to use my new scan tool today. Im just happy to have VVT back.:mrgreen:

Interesting, a bit low, but not totally out of spec. That could potentially be the reason you're getting intermittent good performance.

If I can find the time, I'll pull up page 6-69 and see if there is any additional documentation there that would be helpful.

They key was turned halfway(As if you were to check for Trouble Codes) if that helps....

To clarify, you measured the CPAS resistance with the key on run but the engine off?

Would you mind talking me through your process a little more so I can understand what you did exactly? Be precise.
