Re-grooving tire tread

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

I thought it would be nice to open up a discussion about regrooving tire tread in an attempt to extend tire life. I have done some reading on the subject and it seems to be one of those debates that gets split down the middle every time. Tires are generally made to be retreadable, this means there is extra material between the tread and the belts. Removing this rubber makes the tires officially throw aways, but can extend tire life up to 50%. Just 1/4" of material, or 8/32, is almost 50% of a tires tread depth from new. I am looking at a set of used tires. If this proves to be a good idea, I should be able to triple the life they have left. Just looking to see how this community views it in comparison to others, as I am still on the fence a little.

If you aren't going to use them on the road, and it doesn't matter if tread blocks come off, sure... I will say that there's a difference between doing that to a set of military tires, ag tires, or boggers and doing it on AT tires or more steet-oriented M/T tires... To help with temperature, the carcasses are thinner...
